Description:
Ulu, or breadfruit, was long ago spread throughout the Pacific Islands by
voyaging Polynesians and is most likely native to New Guinea or the Malay
peninsula. It is a beautiful tree, up to 60 ft all. Polynesians ate the fruit
boiled, baked or dried and used the wood for surfboards, hula drums, canoes and
doorposts. British Captain William Bligh's ill-fated ("Mutiny on the Bounty")
expedition in 1788-92 had the objective of bringing breadfruit back from
Polynesia to the Caribbean as a food source. (This was later accomplished.) An
Ulu-Hawaiian quilt is usually the first one made by a quilter as it is supposed
to bring fruitfulness and good luck in life.
