Description:
The diverse members of the Protea family (Proteaeae) are native to South Africa
or Western Australia. The University of Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station
first brought about 50 species of Protea to the Kula area of Maui in the
1960's. Each bloom is not a single flower but a cluster of filamentous,
modified flowers surrounded by brightly-colored petal-like leaves called
bracts. These blooms are usually found in many shades of reds, oranges, pinks,
yellows and celerys. The spectacular King Protea, South Africa's offical
national flower, measures 6 to 12 inches across and is one of the most popular
flowers in Maui's cut flower industry. Protea is widely used by Hawaii's hotels
for large floral decorations in the main lobby to welcome visitors.
